Hairdressing Shears, How to clean and maintain.

High quality hairdressing shears are probably the most expensive tool a hairstylist will invest in. With proper care, the hairdressing shear will last longer and, you as the hair stylist, will have greater enjoyment with every haircut. The salon shear will cut better and subsequently need less sharpening. Are you cleaning and maintaining your shears the correct way?



To clean your hairdressing shears effectively, daily, after each hair cut, remember that sanitation is important! Clean the hair cutting tools with alcohol and rinse with warm soapy water. Be sure to remove any hair on the blades and in the pivot area. Then dry with a soft dry cloth. Do not use a hair dryer. Allow the tools to dry before putting in a case or shear holder. It becomes second nature once you get in the habit.



At the end of each working week, clean your hair cutting tools as you would clean daily, and then apply professional shear oil and lubricant into the pivot area. Apply the oil and lubricant with the salon shears open and then open and close several times to disperse the oil. Store the hair cutting tools, with blades closed, in a shear case or holder.



Several important things to do:



Always store your hair cutting tools in a salon shear case or holder. Do not put anything else into the case besides your salon shears. Other items can rub against the blades and cause damage.



Have your hairdressing shears sharpened as needed. If they are bending the hair, sliding the hair, or the tips do not cut, it is probably time to have the shears serviced. Find a reputable technician who is a Factory Certified Sharpener.



Use a separate container in your work area to store your hair cutting shears. Do not put them in a container with other salon tools, like combs, clips, and brushes. These items can cause nicks and scratches on the blades, which decrease the shear’s performance.



Do not drop the hairdressing shears! This is the most common reason for damage to hair cutting tools. If you drop your shears and think damage has occurred, do not use them until you have had a Factory Certified Sharpener service your salon shears.
